Bulkhead Mounting InstructionsThe bulkhead has been designed and tested in conjunction with a
Road Gear
Truck Equipment, LLC mounting kit. Warning!
Possible danger to the operator or a bystander may
occur if you ignore this information. Caution! Risk to the product. If you ignore this information, the bulkhead system or the trailer could be damaged.
Installing the
Bulkhead Using the Bolted Method Parts you will need:
Bulkhead (1)
Stake Pockets (2)
½” x 1 ½” grade 8 hex head cap screws (4)
½” x 3 ½” grade 8 hex head cap screws (2)
½” flat washers (12)
½” lockwashers (6)
½” hex nuts (6) Note: Stake
Pocket material must match flatbed siderail material. 1.
See figure 1. Position the bulkhead on the flatbed using a suitable
device like a forklift or overhead hoist. The stakes on the bulkhead wrap should
slide freely between the rub rail on the flatbed and the mail siderail. The
bottom plate on the bulkhead should be flush with the front rail of the flatbed. Note: If the trailer pocket is wider than the
width of the bulkhead leg. The bulkhead leg must be centered in the middle of
the pocket, on both sides. Warning: Attempting to lift the bulkhead into
position without a lifting device may cause personal injury to the installer. 2.
Bolt the front of the bulkhead to the flatbed using a minimum of (4)
bolts, spaced as illustrated in figure 1. Note: Before drilling holes, be sure that no
electrical or air lines underneath will be damaged. Also, be sure that there is
sufficient clearance on each side of the fifth-wheel plate. a.
Drill 9/16” diameter holes through the bottom plate of the bulkhead
and the top wall of the front rail on the flatbed. b.
Install the bolts, flat washers, lockwashers, and nuts, but do not
tighten at this time. 3.
See figure 2. From the bottom, drive a furnished stake pocket between
the bulkhead stake and the trailer rub rail until it is positioned ¼” below
the top surface of the flatbed siderail. Be sure that the bulkhead stake is not
binding in the pocket. Note: Make sure that all areas to be welded are clean
and the bare metal is exposed before any welding is done. 4.
Weld the stake pocket to the siderail and the rub rail to fix its
position. Prime and paint the steel stake pockets to keep them from rusting. 5.
See figure 3. Make sure that the bulkhead stake is square (90 degrees)
to the flatbed siderail. This must be done to accommodate the first panel of a
side kit. 6.
Drill a 9/16” diameter hole through the rub rail, stake pocket, stake,
and the flatbed siderail on each side of the flatbed. Install the ½” x 3 ½”
bolts, flat washers, lockwashers, and nuts through the clearance holes just
drilled. Reference Figure 2. 7.
Tighten the ½” x 1 ½” bolts, flat washers, lockwashers, and nuts
at the (4) locations on the front base of the bulkhead. Tighten the nuts
securely on the bottom side of the flatbed and at the bulkhead stake location on
each side. Torque all of the ½” bolts to 125 foot-pounds using a torque
wrench. Note: A second person may be needed to keep
the bolt from turning while each nut is tightened. 8.
Paint the steel bulkhead after installation is completed. 9.
Run a bead of clear silicone between the flatbed toprail and the bottom
of the bulkhead to achieve a water tight seal. (Silicone not furnished.) HOW TO MAINTAIN THE WRAPAROUND BULKHEAD 1.
Be sure that all fasteners are kept tight to proper torque
specifications. 2. Inspect welds for cracks. Grind and reweld as required.
